How to be a Great Client to Your Interior Designer

Be visual: Find pictures from magazines that you like. Hotel and restaurant examples are good too. Basically it is very easy to find things that you like. Share these ideas with your designer, as it will help him get a feel for your overall goals.

Be verbal: Explain how you want to use each, the kind of overall feel you want, your entertaining and relaxing needs, etc. Make sure he knows your style of living so that in the end, you don't end up feeling like you're visiting some one else's home.

Be flexible: Don’t set too many ground rules, let designers be creative within your parameters & budget. There will be changes, problems and unexpected things too. If you have too much restriction, the creative process is stifled and then you may as well be a DIY.

Be available: meetings, emails, shopping trips during weekdays, etc. Or trust the designer to make everything look great and don’t get involved in the details. That is up to you, but make the choice early on and stick to it.

Be pleasant: Designers are working to accomplish your goals, not theirs. Also need and remember this is a business relationship, not a friendship. Friendly is okay, but certainly don't get overly friendly and forget that you hired your design team as professionals. You don't need to hire friends do you??

Don’t fixate on money: designers may want to spend more on certain elements for impact. Remember that as long as they’re within budget everything is cool. Try to relax and enjoy the luxury of hiring someone that can make your home a place you love to end up each night.
